Fire Wizard:
The Nirikarr Shift book 1

When the gates of Rentonvale Castle explode in fire the locals fear sorcery is being used against them. They are wrong.

Their adversary is an unscrupulous man from Earth. With a stolen alien device, he crossed into their world  to plunder their planet using modern explosives. Known as the Fire Wizard, he has assembled a rag-tag mob of cut-throats and brigands to terrify the locals.

In the chaos, he seizes Anna, the blacksmith’s daughter, and transports her to a mountain cabin on Earth – leaving her bewildered and far from home. In Rentonvale, her father forges swords just to keep his girl alive. His young apprentice, Pell, risks everything to spy on them – uncovering secrets hidden beneath the castle that could give them the upper hand.

On Earth, Anna finds an unlikely ally, Michael, a tongue-tied linguistics student who is better with books than people. He sees her fear and wants to help, not realising she is from another planet.

When they find an address in the cabin, the pair race to Chicago to get the device that brought her here.

But the aliens are watching. It’s their device; now they want it back.

It has been a while waiting for Lumley to publish the first book of this intriguing saga and it’s been worth the wait. You can take this as an excursion into the genres of Sci-fi, fantasy and young adult fiction, or you can plumb its deeper sociological, political and ethical undertones; it is charming, fast-paced and satisfying.
